The iPhone 5 is out and the world is abuzz. And Samsung seems to be all prepared to take Apple on, once again. The eternal war between the iPhone and Galaxy series never fail to keep the crowd entertained, and in doing so, they have both ensured a steady stream of loyal followers.
That said, I am guilty - for being a devoted fan of all things Apple.
The strategic timing, making sure that the release of these phones are always so close to each other, never fails to make me wonder if these 2 companies are not actually working together and fooling us consumers.
They come up with all these advertisements comparing the iPhone and Galaxy, just to make us confused and stir our curiosity. Needless to say, the fake videos and descriptions of both phones before their release only work to their advantage.
But this year, Apple seems to be laying low on the advertisements, and Samsung seems to be taking full advantage of it and draining the life out of Apple in their ads. Maybe they're just trying to get back at Apple for the lawsuit they lost.
However, they were slightly (ever so very slightly) subtle in this video ad that they released yesterday. They didn't, in any way use the name Apple, but they used plenty of signs and indirect dialogues to make it all too obvious that they're taking a direct hit at Apple.
Take the earphones for example - it's the trademark Apple earphones. They show it in almost all the scenes.
Although, I must say that there were parts in the ad where they were very sarcastic. For example, the mention of the the headphones jack going to be on the bottom, and the action of "my-mind-is-blown" was too much. Come on, no one's mind would be blown for that, not even mine.
And then there's the part where the girl says, "I heard the connector's all digital. What does that even mean?" Sarcasm yet again. They're trying to say that either the iPhone users are really dumb not to even understand the features of their phone fully, or that Apple is just coming up with fancy features that don't really exist and are actually getting sold out by the millions everywhere solely based on their brand name and not the quality of their products. Excuse moi but the brand recognition has come about because of the quality of their products in the first place.
And then, there's the part where two guys touched their phones and a playlist was transferred through that "touch". Oh please, Samsung, there's an app for the iPhone called Bump where you can do the same thing, and it's been around for a pretty long time.
Then again, in some parts of the video, I can't blame Samsung for taking a dig at Apple.
Like, why in the world did it take so long to just increase the screen size, by just a little? AND, the Galaxy S3 screen is still bigger.
And why did Apple make everyone wait so long for the iPhone 5? The 4S wasn't that great last year, was it?
4S was just the software updated version of 4, that came with a voice called Siri, which isn't exactly that great of a help unless you speak to it with an American slang.
Imagine how awkward that would look on the streets of Singapore, with Singaporeans repeating their sentences over and over again with their Singlish slang.
If the iPhone had the ability to sprout arms, it would slap the life out of people here for the injustice they do to English.
* It's interesting though, how they decided to use the tagline, "The Next Big Thing Is Already Here". So I believe, it's safe to guess that they too, agree that the iPhone is still the Big Thing that came before the Samsung Galaxy. *
Ok, this is not good. I'm getting dragged into the vortex of strategic brand marketing. Though I am a huge Apple fan, I shall not take sides on this one, for I refuse to be just another consumer in the big city, being manipulated by all the branding.
