I would like to think of myself as poetically inclined, no matter how untrue it may be or how much others might disagree with me. So I wrote a poem and shared it with my friends, and they encouraged me to put this up on my blog. Here goes..
She loved and got hurt but once.
That once was enough to make her run.
Run from all the suitors,
Who weren't but sincere lovers.
Lovers who wore masks.
Masks to hide their faces.
The faces which were all too common,
So common but often ignored.
Ignored because of reasons,
The reasons that everyone knew,
They only knew too well.
Too well, but they so chose,
They chose to avoid,
To avoid and to evade.
This the men, they realized,
They realized and they acted.
No one reveal, not once their true faces,
But wear on a mask that looks so serious.
A game of convenience,
For both the beau and the belle
Have a lot not to tell.
And so in circles they've been going
For the centuries that's come on end.
And now it is but a commodity
That, on the streets, you can buy.
In a dim lit alley,
On drugs and stilettos dirty.
Where pieces of paper with colours varied
Blue, Green and Purple
Are ruling the billions.
The circle begins,
To meet and befriend
To use and be used
Then move on to the next.
Sad but wicked truth
Hidden in the vast open desert.
So how could she find
A pure one among the crowd,
The crowd that's gone blind,
Blind with all the vices..
The reaction everyone I shared this with gave me was, "Okay, I know there're a lot of hidden stuff going on in this but I don't get some parts. Please explain".
So I explained it to them, and I shall do the same on my blog as well.
Firstly, this poem, as you can see from the title, is about "Love" in the 21st century society. It goes without saying that true love is diminishing and people are more in love with material possessions than with other humans. The majority of the people are in a relationship for some form of self attainment. That is, they each have some form of gain from their partner. This may be anything, but the most prominent one of all is, of course, monetary gains. And this, is what I tried, by my humble means, to portray in the poem.
Before you start saying that I'm sexist and I wrote this showing the despair of a broken-hearted woman, and how men are just as equally conned by women, let me just state that the "She" in the poem can also be deciphered as Mother Earth. The poem can be looked at from that angle as well, where our Earth is being destroyed by our actions, which result from our greed for money and power. Our actions, which have resulted in all the different types of pollution, and the extinction of various animal species.
Love has become a commodity, that can be bought and sold at a person's will. The one that rules everyone around the world now is money. The "billions" that I refer to is the world's population. The "pieces of paper" is referring to money, and the colours represent the different colours of notes around the world. Blue, green and purple are very common colours for notes, but I also chose these 3 colours to represent something else. Blue, Green and Purple, represent Sorrow, Jealousy and Lust respectively. Sorrow that results from the lack of money, jealousy that ensues sorrow, and lust, that's hidden in every human.
"Sad and wicked truth, hidden in the vast open desert" - you must be wondering, how one can hide something in the vast open desert. Think again. It's so vastly open, and that's the very reason why you can hide something there. That's just how our world is like right now. It's so open to everything and people are becoming more open minded. They know of all these ill situations but most choose not to do anything to correct it. I could have used the vast ocean instead of the desert, but the desert is more apt because of it's arid and dry nature. The ocean is full of life, but the fate of love is otherwise. Therefore, the comparison with the desert.
So ultimately, everyone, even you who is reading this now, know that our world is filled with lies and people wearing masks to hide their true nature in order to attain something. Most people wish to live their own personal lives inside 4 walled shelters called houses and they block themselves out from the world outside. Somehow instead of looking at the character of a person before befriending them, the world prefers to look at the notes in his pockets instead. Will this ever stop? No. Because it's money we're talking about. In between brands doing so much to etch themselves into people's minds and media mostly trying to show that people with money are happy people who get to do what they want and enjoy how they want, the true essence of love and happiness is getting lost.
But is there hope in the world? Yes. Many people have already realised this, and are already out there working on doing what they can, no matter how small it may be, to make a difference in the world. However, the good doesn't always get as much interest or attention as the bad does. It is human nature to always point at others who are worse than them, and start complaining and whining. Perhaps, that is also a reason why people choose to do nothing about anything negative - because they have the blindsight, "Oh there is bound to be someone else out there anyway who is doing something about it, so why should I?"
